Eat

An everyday Filipino table, the city's freshly starred tasting rooms, and Binondo counters that predate them all.

A high-angle view of Toyo Eatery's warm concrete-and-wood dining room — a long live-edge communal table with wishbone chairs and dried-flower arrangements, guests seated, and a chef plating at the open counter beyond.Feature

Toyo Eatery

PICK

Jordy and May Navarra's tasting-menu room tucked in a warehouse plaza, the country's most-decorated Filipino kitchen and the benchmark splurge on this list. Book weeks out, go for the full tasting, and don't skip the Bahay Kubo vegetable course.

The blowout, worth the calendar math.

The dining room at Manam — round wooden tables set with bowls and glasses under a coffered ceiling and arched wood-paneled niches, staff at the service counter at the back.

Manam Comfort Filipino

PICK

The reliable modern-Filipino table you send everyone to first: classics done straight plus a few smart twists, all in small and big sizes so you can over-order without regret. Get the house crispy sisig and the watermelon sinigang, and go off-peak or expect a mall-hour wait.

The safe yes, and it's a good one.

Celera

ALT

A dim, black-toned Makati dining room from two chef-owners running contemporary Asian plates across Japanese, Chinese and Singaporean influences. It holds a Michelin star, and it's harder to place on a casual itinerary than the Filipino-forward picks.

The pan-Asian star for a different kind of night.

Order: The chef's tasting selection — ask what's seasonal.

EAT · MAKATI · $$$$ · 3rd floor, Comuna, Pablo Ocampo Sr. Extension, Makati. · Dinner service; reserve ahead.

A latte in a paper cup printed 'Coffee is our love language' on a wooden table at Yardstick Coffee, the Yardstick sign on the dark wall and the coffee bar and tables beyond.Feature

Yardstick Coffee

PICK

Manila's third-wave benchmark and effectively the city's barista school: high industrial room, serious espresso, brunch that holds up. Great for a focused morning, but it fills and gets loud by midday, so land early for a table and a plug.

The reference bar. Come before the room does.

Drink & night

Cocktails foraged from Filipino ingredients and a bar program with an actual Michelin trophy. The Poblacion original that started the boom is still pouring.

The jungle-like interior of Agimat Foraging Bar — a live tree and hanging greenery under magenta light, a backlit wall of bottles behind the bar, long communal tables, and the lit Agimat sign on the back wall.

Agimat Foraging Bar

ALT

A two-floor foraging bar building cocktails entirely from Philippine ingredients, ferments and folklore. Theatrical, right down to a chanted ritual with the signature pour, but the drinks deliver. Come for one round and the shtick, not a quiet night.

Gimmicky on paper, good in the glass.

DRINK · POBLACION · $$

The Grasshopper Bar

Polilya

PICKCLASSIC

The bar credited with kicking off Poblacion's nightlife boom in 2017. Mid-century tropical room, house-brand Engkanto craft beer worked into the cocktails, and still a reliable anchor on a strip that's turned over many times since.

Do & wander

Old Manila on two wheels and a Saturday market worth planning around. Plus the one waterfront attraction to walk straight past.

Intramuros & Fort Santiago

PICK

The Spanish-era walled city and the one piece of old Manila worth real time: cobbles, San Agustin Church, and the ruins of Fort Santiago. Cover it on a Bambike bamboo-bike tour to do it in a morning, and start early before the heat lands.

Old Manila, condensed into one morning.

DO · INTRAMUROS · $

Manila Ocean Park

SKIP

The waterfront oceanarium coasting on its spot by the bay: tired tanks, an add-on ticket for nearly every show, and a hard upsell over what you get to see. Give the hours to Intramuros or a seawall sunset instead.

The overpriced skip.

DO · ERMITA, BAYFRONT · —

Salcedo Saturday Market

PICK

The Black Nazarene's home church and the sprawling market around it, all religious goods, street food and herbal stalls. The rawest, least-curated wander on this list, best on a weekday morning. Bring small bills; the stalls here run on cash.

The wander that earns the front-pocket-phone warning.

Order: Street food from a stall you've watched turn over its pan.

DO · QUIAPO, MANILA · $ · Quiapo Church, near Carriedo LRT-1 station. · Church open daily, free entry; busiest on Fridays and Jan 9.
